Not a fan Sep 08, 2010 The main issue with this product is, indeed, its central component: the fan unit. Within about 3 weeks of getting this cooling stand (3 happy weeks) - the fan started to sound like a lawn mower. If you open up the unit, you will see that the fan is a sealed-unit, no name, no-spec piece of junk. I am thinking of shopping around for a suitable retro-fit 5V fan, rather than junk the whole unit.
But in the meantime, I put some rubber bands to act as washers in under the screw mounting holes for the fan (which by the way is anchored only at two corners) and tensioned these round the posts for the main casing screws. And I put some rubber dampers on the top of the fan casing, to make sure it is not abrading the top shell. The unit actually runs quiet with these mods, but putting the casing back on increases the noise from the airflow significantly - I guess because it (the air) is all routed up through the top grill, which also has very sharp edges creating drag? So - the unit is now usable again, but I'm far from happy.
Can I also mention that the little stand unit tends to collapse like a badly assembled deckchair, and the USB hub is too glitchy to use with any peripheral you actually care about?
As the product description itself hints: this unit doesn't suck - it BLOWS!
Prone to failure; tilt stand is worthless Sep 05, 2010 I've had two of these in a month and I had horrible experiences with both. While the fan really does a great job cooling the laptop, the rest of the stand lacks any structural integrity. The first one I owned lasted two weeks before it the fan started making a hideous sound, like it was struggling to run while hitting a hard rubber band. Eventually the fan just stopped working altogether.
I realized that this may have happened because I tried using it the cooling stand on my lap and other non-hard surfaces, but TWO WEEKS? I don't use the computer all day--only for an hour or so at a time--and to know that this thing couldn't take a little roughness from sitting on my lap is sad. After exchanging for a new product (figuring this was a defect), the second Belkin cooling stand I owned suffered the same fate despite taking more careful measures (i.e., only using the laptop stand on a hard surface to prevent blocking air intake).
I want to also add that I HATE the tilt stand. It's flimsy and if you accidentally push forward on your laptop the tilt stand collapses back to its resting position causing the laptop and stand to come crashing down. Useless tilting stand and dangerous to your hardware.
Had this for 1 month and it's junk...pure junk! Sep 04, 2010 I bought this cooling pad at Target. One month later I hear this horrible noise coming from under my laptop and I checked it out. I thought I might have found dust. I did clean it out gently every week or so. But...No. It was missing a fan blade. When I blew on it to clear off what little dust there was, 2 more fan blades fell off. Unfortunately it had been over a month since I bought the Belkin, and I could not find the receipt or I would have taken it back. I was stuck with this hunk of junk. Don't bother with this thing. Your laptop deserves better. Spend 5 more bucks and get something that will last more than a month. I wish I had. Now I'm gonna have to spend $30 anyway. Save yourself some pain and frustration. Steer clear of this cheap hunk of crap.
Not worth the headache! Aug 31, 2010 I purchased this unit locally about three months ago. Two months ago the support piece on the bottom broke and coincidentally the fan became very loud. The support is a piece of plastic that snaps onto the bottom of the unit, so I contacted Belkin for a new support. They don't replace just the support, they replace the entire unit. Being in a hurry to get a new unit, I went the quick return route. Belkin puts a $60 hold on your credit card until your $20 units are exchanged. You pay S&H. I excitedly received my second unit within a few days (my laptop runs very hot), hooked it up, and it worked great--for the first month. It began running very loud and finally died last night. It was two months old. This unit isn't worth the effort put into returning it. I'm throwing it out and going with another brand tonight.
Great idea for a cool computer Aug 31, 2010 The Belkin Laptop cooling pad, does exactly what it is suppose to do, considering the inexpensive price it is definetely worth getting. I like it so much I bought one more for my granddaughter's computer and she likes it as well.
